Perfect First Dance Process

Fall in love with first dance…here’s how I helped one couple create their perfect routine

I wanted to share an example of how The Love Of Dance has helped a wedding couple to meet their first dance dreams. There’s no one size fits all, which is why I tailor the process of teaching the basics of the ballroom styles to every couple, and develop the first dance with them along the way. I’ve been teaching first dance for almost 15 years (and dance for 20 years!), so I now rarely plan anything until I’ve had the first lesson with my couples – and it’s usually a beautiful process!

Real life first wedding dance couple E&J

This superb photo below was sent to me by the absolute superstars E&J along with their 5*  feedback.  They had a one day intensive dance EXPERIENCE with me.  I can’t even call this process a lesson because the 5 hours were completely collaborative.  They wanted some moves for their first dance to the dramatic Killer Queen by Queen.  They freestyled together and showed me the powerful vibe they wanted to bring to their dance, I took that vibe, rolled with it and – for those of you who have performing arts knowledge of any kind: we ‘workshopped’ their whole routine.  I’d prepped some moves for them, then pretty much just helped them order their own moves into a routine they could remember, teaching them some basics of foxtrot too, so they will still have the skill forevermore knowing how to properly lead and follow.  Their final rehearsal gave me goosebumps.

Here’s the glorious feedback from E&J

“Absolutely incredible experience. Alison was fun, casual and incredibly talented. She understood our vision, pitched her teaching at the right level for us and we had a fabulous time. Everyone at the wedding said it was the best first dance they’d ever seen!!”

Ooh, and there’s more!I also offer hen dance parties and did you know I can help with a wedding fitness, wellness and nutrition plan to help get you feeling like your best self for your wedding?! ;)We can chat more when you’re ready…and a reminder it’s really important to book you first dance lessons as soon as possible to give yourselves loads of time to prepare and feel calm and confident on the day!  I would usually suggest 6 months in advance of the big day where possible!

Tips to Calm First Dance and Wedding Day Nerves

“When you dance the purpose is not to get to a certain place on the floor. It’s to enjoy each step along the way.” Wayne Dyer

I’m refreshing a previous post about enjoying every step of the first dance! How to prepare the mind both in advance and in the day to help you calm and focus yourself, and calm the First Dance and Wedding Day Nerves.

Here’s some tips (used by performers – true story!) to help calm your first wedding dance or wedding day nerves:

  1. Practice the power pose behind the scenes – proven to boost confidence.
  2. Roll the shoulders back and lift the chest to stand tall and proud.
  3. Find ways to relax the face – tension in the face could bring tension into the rest of the body.
  4. Find a way to help calm the mind – whether mindfulness, visualisation, meditation – whatever works for you. Perhaps find a routine to practice on the morning of your wedding to help chill the mind.
  5. Practise a breathing technique you could try in the moment – pull yourselves to the side and have a little powwow breathing pattern that you’ve tried in advance and links you to a chance to centre you into the moment.
  6. Find an essential oil blend toolkit that you can carry in your wedding day essentials kit or handbag and keep the oils near for the day – have a little sniff of to energise you, calm you, relieve a tension headache…whatever you think you’ll need!
